Audit of site – Day two

Blue velvet curtain - Sideways projection

Site visit – Broadmeadows Town hall
Audit of site – Day two – 19th December

Day two on site felt so much more familiar. The supper room had ben set up with round tables for the Friday Christmas party which was an interesting contrast to the emptiness of the first visit. The intended purpose of the space seemed more activated.

I spent most of my time in the Hall space. Recapturing videos of the curtain to see if I can up the resolution with the use of a light. I also mopped the floor to bring out greater definition in the wood. I began shooting the front of the curtain at the point that they meet. Setting the video on its side made the movement of the curtains appear like the movement of waves. It also had a strong likeness to organic forms or macro footage of the interior of vessels.

I re shot footage of the back of the curtain with the stronger light which really amplified the wood and created a very strongly defined wavelike pattern. There is a strong sense of landscape in this outcome. I think I mentioned before the oscillating movement seemed to map with a kind of regularity. As far as a mapping of movement to seemed so much more optimistically even in comparison to the turbulence of external environmental and political situations.

I could imagine setting up a row of HD cameras to capture the length of the curtain and representing this with HD screens set in a row. The movement of the curtain felt like a kind of seismic mapping. Wonderful to think this is traced from the natural movement of airflow into the hall. The hall breathing. It is worth noting the wind was up outside which increased the movement of the curtain but even on a fairly still day there was some wonderful subtle movement in the curtain.

Yianni spent some time capturing the different spaces on video. Great to see his excitement of the space and the possibilities of capturing it through sweeping camera movements.

Research directs – Suppliers of curtains, floors and possible industry/community connections. Certainly socio-political considerations of these spaces. Both the curtain as a threshold between audience and actor and the floor as a threshold between community and the raw ground beneath. Its this between-ness that is special here. Whether it is the 20mm of floor or the 1mm of curtain, it is an important transition.
